Getting College Credit
One of the ways to broaden an area of aptitude or interest for your highschoolers is to enroll them in a college correspondence course. Through correspondence you can get coursework that is Christian-based and give them a jump start on college credits in the process.

You can find many colleges and universities offering distance learning in Peterson’s Independent Study Catalog, which is a guide to continuing education through correspondence courses, or Bear’s Guide to Earning College Degrees Non-traditionally. These books may be available at your local library, in your local bookstore, or are frequently available in catalogs from various homeschool sources.

Distance learning is also a great way for parents to earn some extra years of formal education. It is a great way to learn about an area you may have a particular interest in or give you an opportunity to get some teaching skills you’d like to have.

Correspondence work is flexible and can be worked around your own schedule and needs. You can start anytime during the year and usually take up to a year to complete a class, although you can finish in a much shorter time if you like. On-line courses are increasingly an option. These courses are often less flexible, as most involve the student “attending” the regular class sessions and participating in discussions. Assignments and exams typically have specific due dates as in traditional classroom settings.

The number of options available to homeschooling families increases each year as teachers realize the joy of working with disciplined and motivated students.
