Homeschooling students of West Virginia are eligible for the merit based Promise Scholarship. Scholarships may be used at a public college or university, or an equivalent dollar scholarship to a private college (including community and technical colleges) or university, in West Virginia. Homeschooling students must have received a GED, before funds can be awarded. A student must graduate with a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average in both the core courses and overall grade point average.
ACT and SAT are college board exams. SAT is not to be confused with the Stanford Achievement Test. More info can be found about the SAT at: http://www.collegeboard.com/
ACT is at http://www.act.org/
Students who test well and are college bound may want to consider taking an SAT or ACT test in 9th grade. Definitely take it before 12th. Taking it two or more times does not hurt the student. A lot of successful test taking has to do with being familiar with the test format. An ACT is more similar to a standardized test. If you look at the Promise application form, you will notice that either one is acceptable.
The scholarship is usable at any accredited college in West Virginia. This means that students can attend Appalachian Bible College and have up to the current cost of tuition at a public college taken off of their tuition bill. Students going to vocational-technical schools can receive help. Another helpful feature is that in some cases, the Promise can be stacked with other scholarship awards. If your child is even remotely considering going to a post secondary school in West Virginia then learn more about this option.
